That is why our first window opens at 8am and the last runs to 6pm Monday to Friday, with Saturday from 9am to 3pm, and why we ask when you book whether you need the technician before or after work. The failures sort themselves by type. Coil ranges lose a burner to a bad receptacle or an infinite switch stuck on high. Glass-tops lose a radiant element or a switch, and their electronic oven controls take surges badly in hurricane season. Gas ranges in the newer infill have igniters that glow but no longer pull enough current to open the oven valve, so the oven stays cold. Wall ovens in the Dorchester Rd subdivisions blow a thermal fuse after a self-clean cycle. North Charleston is on Charleston Water System, so water is not a factor here; heat, age, surges and use are. A rental range that has cooked for three tenants is due for an element.
On electric ranges in Park Circle and Wescott that is the bake element, metered open, or a sensor reading wrong at room temperature. On the gas slide-ins at Oak Terrace Preserve it is an igniter drawing too few amps to open the valve, even though it glows. Both are stocked and replaced on the visit.
Coil range: the coil or the receptacle beneath it, or the switch. Glass-top: the radiant element or its switch, with the glass lifted to reach them. Gas: a fouled igniter electrode or a cracked cap on that position. We swap the coil to another position first to prove it, then meter the switch.
An infinite switch has welded closed and no longer cycles, so the coil or radiant element runs flat out at any setting. Turn the breaker off until the visit. The switch is metered and replaced from the van for Whirlpool, GE, Frigidaire and Kenmore ranges, which is most of what North Charleston cooks on.
One burner clicking alone is a wet or crumb-fouled electrode or a cracked cap. All of them clicking at once, even with the knobs off, is a spark module or a switch that got wet under a boil-over. We dry, clean and test, then replace the module or switch only if the meter says so.
Self-clean runs the cavity far hotter than baking and trips the thermal fuse or door lock on many ovens, especially the wall ovens in the 2000s Dorchester Rd houses. We replace the fuse, check the lock motor and cooling fan, and tell you plainly whether self-clean is worth using again on that model.
Codes point at the sensor, the door lock or the relay board. A blank display after a June storm is usually the control board itself, a familiar call from the Navy Yard to Coosaw Creek. We read the code, meter the sensor and lock first because they are cheap and common, and replace the board only when proven dead.
An oven diagnosis is measurement. On a gas oven the technician clamps an ammeter on the igniter circuit and watches whether the current reaches the valve’s threshold; an igniter that glows orange but never gets there is the fault. On an electric oven the bake and broil elements are metered for resistance and the sensor is read at room temperature against the chart. Surface burners are tested at the switch and the element. On wall ovens the thermal fuse and door lock come first. Only after the readings agree does the technician name the part in plain words and write one price, and the $99 diagnostic is already inside that price rather than added to it.

It is a failing igniter, not a leak. The igniter has to draw a set current to open the safety valve, and an old one glows without reaching it, so gas never flows. If you ever smell gas, leave and call the utility first. Otherwise, this is a stocked part and a same-visit repair in North Charleston.
