From there Summerville opens into three different places. The old town around Hutchinson Square and the Flowertown streets, with azaleas, deep lots and houses that have seen four generations of appliances. The middle ring off Old Trolley Rd, Ashborough, Sangaree and the streets toward Ladson, built in the 1970s through the 90s. And the new towns at the edges: Nexton, Cane Bay and Carnes Crossroads, each of them larger than the old downtown and still adding streets. A single day on the Summerville route can touch all three.
The housing stock tells us what will fail before we open the van. In the old town it is a mix of everything, often a newer machine squeezed into an older space, with dryer vents through crawlspaces and refrigerators in alcoves that starve the condenser of air. The middle ring is on its second or third set of appliances, mid-range brands with a decade of use, failing on pumps, elements, igniters and defrost parts in no particular pattern. The new subdivisions are the opposite: hundreds of identical builder packages installed within months, reaching the same wear points together.
