It rarely quits all at once. The first sign in a Mount Pleasant or West Ashley kitchen is a bin that used to fill overnight and now takes two days. Then the cubes get small and hollow, then a few come out cloudy and stuck together, and finally the tray sits empty while the refrigerator hums along perfectly. Each step points at a part: a fill valve passing less water, a thermostat or sensor tripping late, a mold heater failing to release the cubes, an ejector motor stalling. Water plays a role, but not the one people expect. North Charleston, Hanahan, West Ashley, downtown and Mount Pleasant sit on moderately soft municipal water, so their ice makers fail on valves, motors and sensors rather than scale. Goose Creek, Ladson, Summerville and Moncks Corner see mild hardness that narrows the fill valve and clouds the cubes after a few years. Johns Island wells put real mineral through the mold. Add the Lowcountry summer, when a garage refrigerator in Ladson cannot hold freezer temperature and the ice maker is the first thing to stop, and hurricane-season surges that scramble the control that runs the harvest cycle. We test the valve, the module and the freezer temperature together.
The shutoff arm or sensor may be stuck in the off position, the freezer may be running too warm to trigger a harvest, the fill valve may be dead, or the module itself may have quit. We check the freezer temperature first, then power the valve and cycle the module by hand to see which step fails.
Low fill. The inlet valve is restricted, the water pressure at the refrigerator is weak, or the fill tube is partly frozen. In Summerville and Goose Creek a scaled valve is the usual answer; on Charleston Water System supply it is more often a kinked line behind the unit or a tired valve that no longer opens fully.
A fill valve that drips after it closes lets water run down the tube and freeze, and the tube seals shut. Sometimes the mold overfills and spills. We thaw the tube, replace the valve so it seats cleanly, and check the cube-size setting so the mold stops overflowing on the next harvest.
Old ice absorbs freezer odors, and a filter past its life adds its own flavor. We check the filter date, dump the bin, and inspect the mold for mineral or mold growth. If the cubes are cloudy on Berkeley County or well water, the filter and the fill valve screen are where the fix lives.
The mold heater warms the tray so the ejector can push cubes out; when it fails the cubes stay and the motor strains. On auger-style dispensers a frozen bin or a stripped auger does the same. We meter the heater and motor, free the mechanism, and replace what reads bad.
Water where it should not be means the valve is not closing, the fill cup is misaligned, or the mold has cracked. Ice on the freezer floor under the bin is the classic sign. We test valve shutoff, reseat the fill tube and replace the mold assembly if it is split.
The diagnosis takes the ice maker as a system rather than a box. The freezer temperature is read first, because an ice maker in a freezer holding 15 degrees will never harvest and the fault is really the refrigerator. Then the fill valve is powered directly and its flow watched; a valve that trickles or drips after closing is named on the spot. The module is cycled by hand through a full harvest so the heater, ejector motor and sensor can each be observed doing their job. On dispensers the auger, chute door and dispenser switch get the same look. Only then do you hear the failed part in plain words and one written number. The $99 you agreed to at booking is already inside that number.

Depends where you are. On Charleston Water System in North Charleston, West Ashley or downtown, cloudy cubes are usually trapped air from a low fill or an old filter, not mineral. In Summerville, Goose Creek and Ladson mild hardness does cloud the ice, and on Johns Island wells it is real scale. The filter and fill valve are the fix in every case.
Yes, and it is the first thing we check. A filter past its six-month life drops the water pressure at the fill valve, the mold under-fills, and the cubes come out small or the harvest skips. If a new filter cures it, the visit ends with the diagnostic and nothing more, and you know the ice maker itself is fine.
