The 1940s to 1960s houses in Park Circle, Liberty Hill, Union Heights and the streets off Remount Rd sit on crawlspaces, and their dryer vents were added later, usually a flex duct dropped through the floor and run twenty feet under the house. An electric dryer runs on a double breaker; one leg tripped leaves the drum turning cold. Beyond the panel, summer surges take out control boards, and a dead display after a June thunderstorm is a familiar call from Wescott to Union Heights. The board is replaced only when the meter proves it dead.
The technician meters before touching a part. An electric element has a known resistance and reads open when it is dead. A thermal fuse reads closed or it does not, and an open fuse is a message that the dryer overheated, which sends the technician to the vent for the cause.
