Refrigerator calls in this metro follow the thermometer. The first week of real heat, usually early June, the phone fills with garage refrigerators in Summerville, Goose Creek and Johns Island that ran fine all spring and now cannot hold 40 degrees in a 95-degree garage. Through July and August the kitchen units follow: condenser fans seized with pet hair, evaporator coils frozen into a block, defrost heaters open. Then hurricane season stacks a second problem on top. The machines themselves vary by neighborhood. Park Circle and Hanahan ranches still run twenty-year-old Whirlpool and Kenmore top-freezers that fail on a defrost timer or a start relay. The 2000s subdivisions along Dorchester Rd, in Nexton and in Carolina Park own Samsung and LG French-door units whose ice-maker compartments frost over and whose inverter boards take surges badly. Daniel Island, I’On and the peninsula add Sub-Zero, Thermador and Viking built-ins with separate compressors and panels that have to come off cleanly. Salt air near the harbor and the beaches eats condenser coils and fan motors early; inland in Ladson and Moncks Corner the same parts last years longer.
Cold air is made in the freezer and moved to the fresh-food side by a fan through a damper. Warm fridge with a working freezer means the evaporator fan has quit, the damper is stuck, or the coil is iced over from a failed defrost part. We open the back panel and find which.
If the compressor is hot and running but nothing gets cold, the condenser coil may be packed with dust, the condenser fan may be dead, or the sealed system has lost charge. The first two are quick; the third gets a leak check and a written number so you can decide with the facts.
That is the start relay or overload trying to start the compressor and failing. Sometimes it is a bad relay and a five-minute fix from the van. Sometimes the compressor itself has seized. The meter on the compressor windings tells us which before anyone quotes anything.
Heavy frost on the back wall and the food means the defrost cycle has stopped: heater, thermostat, sensor or control board. On French-door units a frozen ice-maker compartment is its own common failure. We melt it down, test each part in the defrost circuit and replace the one that reads wrong.
Water inside, pooling under the drawers, is a clogged defrost drain. Water on the floor is the drain again, a split water line to the ice maker, or a failed fill valve. We trace it to the source, clear or replace what is needed and check the line behind the unit for the slow drip.
Surges during hurricane season take out main control boards and inverter boards across the Lowcountry every summer. We check the outlet and the power supply first, then meter the board outputs. If the board is dead we say so, price it in writing, and only then replace it.
A refrigerator diagnosis is a chain of measurements. Thermometers go in both compartments. The compressor gets an amp reading and the relay and overload get metered. The back panel comes off so the technician can see whether the evaporator coil is evenly frosted, iced solid or bare, and each of those points to a different fault. The defrost heater, thermostat and sensors are checked for continuity. The condenser fan and coil are inspected from below. Only after that does the technician name the failed part and hand you one written number. The $99 you agreed to at booking is inside that number. If the news is a sealed-system fault on an old unit, you hear that plainly too.

Keep the doors closed; a closed refrigerator holds safe temperature for about four hours and a full freezer for a day or two. Do not unplug it unless it is tripping the breaker.
