Nowhere else on our route does the kitchen matter as much as it does in Mount Pleasant. The Old Village and I’On renovations installed pro-style gas ranges and separate wall ovens: Wolf, Thermador, Viking, JennAir, sometimes Miele. Dunes West, Park West and Carolina Park kitchens carry a step below that, KitchenAid, Bosch, GE Café and Samsung, usually a gas cooktop with a double wall oven or a slide-in dual-fuel range. Snee Farm and the 1980s streets off Coleman Blvd and US-17 have freestanding electric ranges, many of them glass-top, on their second or third replacement. Gas service runs through most of town, so gas and electric faults arrive in roughly equal numbers on the Mount Pleasant route.
Pro-style equipment fails in its own way. The burners are sealed and the igniters are individually controlled, so one burner clicking while the others light is a single electrode, not the whole spark module. Oven controls are electronic, with relay boards that switch heavy bake and broil loads and a temperature probe that the board trusts absolutely. When the board or the probe drifts, the oven misbehaves in ways that feel random. Salt air in the Old Village and near Shem Creek corrodes spark electrodes and board connectors faster than inland. And a surge after a storm outage can leave a wall oven with a dark display and nothing else wrong. The diagnosis follows the electronics.
On sealed-burner ranges each burner has its own electrode. A cracked or salt-fouled electrode, a wet or misaligned cap, or a clogged port keeps that one burner from lighting. We clean and seat the cap, test the electrode and replace it if the spark is weak or absent.
A spark module that has lost its shutoff, moisture in the igniter switch harness after a boil-over, or a switch that has stuck. We isolate the switch bank, dry and test the harness and replace the module or switch that the meter identifies.
A relay board that is dropping the bake element mid-cycle, a temperature probe drifting out of range, or a door gasket letting heat escape. We log actual cavity temperature against the display, test the probe’s resistance and watch the relay under load.
A radiant element that has opened, an infinite switch welded closed, or a burnt terminal at the element block. A burner stuck on high should be shut off at the breaker until we arrive. We lift the top, test each element and switch and replace the failed one.
On gas ovens a weak igniter that glows but never opens the valve, measured by its current draw. On electric ovens an open bake element or a failed relay on the board. On dual-fuel units it could be either side, and the meter tells us which before anything is quoted.
A surge through the control when power came back. We confirm the outlet and the double-pole breaker, then test the board’s power supply and the display module. Wall ovens on Thermador, Wolf and JennAir often have separate boards, and only the failed one is quoted.
A gas range diagnosis starts with the grates and caps off. The technician watches each burner spark, checks flame color and shape once lit, and times the oven igniter from click to flame while measuring its amperage. On a pro-style range the burner switches and the spark module are tested as a set to find the one that has failed. Electric ovens and cooktops get continuity readings across elements, switches and the terminal block, and the temperature probe is measured against its published curve. Boards are tested last and quoted only when the parts around them have checked good. Wall ovens usually come out of the cabinet for access, which the technician plans for. Everything becomes one written number, and approval starts the repair from the van.

Usually. Uneven heat points to a convection fan that has stopped, a hidden bake element failing on one section, or a door hinge that has sagged and lets heat out one side. We log temperatures at several points in the cavity, test the fan and element and replace what has failed.
Continuous clicking on a burner that is lit is a nuisance, not a hazard, and usually means a wet or misaligned cap or a stuck igniter switch. Clicking on a burner that will not light means gas may be flowing without ignition; turn the knob off and call. We treat that as a same-week call.
It reaches the parts that spark and the parts that connect. Igniter electrodes near the Old Village, Shem Creek and the Connector foul faster than inland, and board connectors green over time. It is not dramatic, but it is why we inspect every electrode and connector while the top is up.
